The Review

Just Kim again!  A friend and I started out at the Peacock Lounge (Erte's bar) for happy hour - $2 off martinis!  We wound up staying for dinner.

First, the Peacock Lounge is one of my favorite happy hour spots.  The martinis are a mixture of classics and creatives, and they're always well executed.  The happy hour $2 discount brings them to $8 per drink, and they're worth it.  I promise. :)

The soup was tasty but with a touch of sweetness that slightly bothered me.  The filet was excellent.  They handled medium rare perfectly, which is sometimes touch-and-go - even at steakhouses.  It was tender and something I'd definitely get again.  The au gratin potatoes are like (as the waiter told us), lasagna with potatoes instead of pasta.  Oh, and without a red sauce.  They're layered with Gruyere and caramelized onions.  Lots and lots of butter too, so I'm happy that we split an order.  They're very rich, which is likely why I loved them so much. :)

The Review

In full disclosure, this was just me (Kim), with some co-workers.  It was a beautiful day, so we headed to Jax to eat outside by the tulips and the trout creek.  We had the ultra-private table in the corner of the garden, and as always, it was beautiful.

They changed the lunch menu somewhat recently, evidently, since some of their old standards aren't listed any longer (such as their mac & cheese and the chicken pot pie).  The server told us that they had updated and simplified it, and it looked like there were some good choices available.

My walleye slider was great - really tasty with some nice tartar sauce on the side.  The burger was alright, but I thought that it was too heavily seasoned.  The beef flavor was pretty masked.  The fries were great.

I can highly recommend the Jax garden - the gardeners do a great job, and it's ever-changing throughout the spring and summer.  Once in a while you'll even get a show with your meal as a staff member (or brave customer) selects a trout with a net.

The Review

Let me start by saying that I truly wanted to love Forepaugh's.  I hadn't been there since 1994, when my mom and I went to dinner prior to seeing "Phantom of the Opera."  That visit was the first time that I had (and loved) beef wellington.  (I think they called it filet de boeuf en croute, honestly, but I still think of that first time as beef wellington.)  Mom has been back more recently, and she tends to enjoy it.

All I can think is that the higher-than-usual traffic levels for Mother's Day made the quality go downhill. The menu was served family-style, so there were no choices about what you received other than your drinks - which were not included in the brunch price.

The big deal about Forepaugh's lately is that everything is homemade.  Typically this would be good.... for example, the granola that was served with the yogurt was excellent.  On the flip side, the cinnamon rolls were like barely-iced hockey pucks. I'm not a baker (at all), but I'm pretty sure that they didn't get enough time to rise and then the issues were compounded by over-baking.

The eggs benedict had a similar issue - I can't eat much in the way of eggs, but Mom enjoyed them once she was able to saw through the tough, over-toasted English muffin.

The rest of the meal was okay, but I expected a lot more than "okay" from Forepaugh's for their well-publicized Mother's Day meal.

The pricing now bothers me too.  When I go back to their website (on May 13) and check their brunch menu, the brunch (at half the price of what I paid) now includes a complimentary mimosa, champagne, juice or coffee.  The mimosas are listed at $4 each, whereas I paid $6 each.  I don't typically nitpick price - in fact, I'm usually overly unconcerned about watching prices when good restaurants are involved - but this feels like price inflation just because of the date on the calendar.  Perhaps it's a supply/demand situation - at least that's what I'm telling myself so that I don't get crankier about it. ;)

The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice, and I really did enjoy having brunch with my mom.  I just wish the food had been more impressive.

I will go back.... I want to give this place another shot.... I'm just not in a hurry to give it that second chance.

The Review

A great start to Mother's Day weekend!  My mom and I (Kim) went to the Guthrie Theater for "Arms and the Man" on Saturday night.  I made reservations for Sea Change prior to the show - if you're wondering about timing, I'd suggest reservations at 5:00 if you like to linger over dinner prior to a 7:30 show.  That gives you plenty of time to eat multiple courses, walk out onto the bridge to check out the river, and use the restrooms before your show.

We got there a few minutes before 5:00, and those of us with 5:00/5:15 reservations were asked to wait a bit while they finished preparing the dining room.  We sat in the bar and started out with a glass of wine (me) and gin on the rocks (Mom).  The bartender was pleasant and efficient, though it took us a while to get our bill to close out when our table was ready.

For dinner, we started with the tuna carpaccio served with a spicy pepper ice cream.  The tuna was excellent, and the pepper ice cream was intriguing.  It had quite a kick for our "Minnesota" palates.

I had the beef flat iron (I know, I know, I'm at a seafood place), and I loved it.  The "mousse" had loads of flavor, which paired well with the bitter greens.  The steak was excellent, and I wound up not regretting trying the steak at a seafood place.

Mom had the special of the night - halibut poached in... well, you can see the description right above this.  She loved it, and I enjoyed the bite that I tried.  And morel mushrooms!  Yay!

Dessert was to die for.  We split each dessert to get a mixture of tastes.  The chocolate cremeux plate had the dense "brownie," a chocolate mixture that we called chocolate jello, cherry preserves, and ice cream. We both figured that Jello should start doing a dense chocolate jello (and no, I don't mean pudding).  Calamansi was new for me - I had to look it up on my iPhone when we were browsing the dessert menu.  It's a citrus fruit, and this was like a lemon napoleon.  The crisps were made out of sesame brittle, the filling was calamansi, and there was coconut ice cream.  There were also some ginger accents on the plate.  I think that I'm sold on the merit of calamansi now....

To wrap up - Tim McKee's kitchen did an excellent job.  The creativity was amazing, and the execution was up to his usual standards.
